THE TOP 5 PLAYA DEL CARMEN ROOFTOP BARS

Instead of downing drinks at mundane haunts, why not elevate your style of socializing at one of these top five Playa del Carmen rooftop bars.  You can appreciate Playa’s beauty while enjoying panoramic vistas of the Caribbean Sea.  And once you reach the pinnacle of Playa’s watering holes, feel the cool ocean breezes refresh and awaken that spirit inside.

Certainly come at sunset to sip colorful cocktails as the sky turns cotton candy colored pink and purple.  Even if you don’t drink, the views make the experience worthwhile.  Why not order a mocktail and develop a fresh perspective of Playa from up high.

Although all of these rooftop bars reside within hotels, they welcome the general public.  However, use of the pools tends to include an additional cost.  Regardless I visit Playa’s rooftop bars for the view and vibe, not to soak in the sea.

The Top 5 Playa del Carmen Rooftop Bars

1 – Purobeach

Opened in 2018 Purobeach offers a relaxed, casual vibe atop The Fives Downtown Hotel & Residences.  Staff serve libations in a super friendly fashion without pretense.  Sunset views off the reflecting pools never fail to amaze me.  Plus the food tastes first class.  Fresh and innovative, I often come with my camera and stay for drinks and dinner.

Cost: Buy at least one drink 0r meal to use the pool and chairs.  However the large sun beds cost $700 pesos which can be applied towards drinks and food.

Location: 10th Avenue and Calle 2 Norte, atop the Fives Downtown Hotel & Residences.

2 – Catch at the Thompson Hotel

Catch at the top of the Thompson Hotel subsists as a seafood restaurant that also doubles as a rooftop bar.  I prefer their speciality cocktails like La Playa del la Reina filled with white rum, kahlua, coconut cream, pineapple and mayan vanilla.  Although the staff stopped me from taking photos, the drinks are divine and views unsurpassed.

And since trendy 5th Avenue sits below, you can also people watch while you simultaneously soak in the sunset.  Otherwise if you’re hungry, Catch specializes in small seafood tidbits that are meant to be shared.  The grub never seems to disappoint.

Cost: Buy at least one drink 0r meal to use the roof deck.  If you want to use the pool or lounge chairs, pay $69 USD per person and receive a $50 USD credit for drinks and food.

Location: 5th Avenue and 10th Street atop the Thompson Hotel

3 – Deck 5 Skybar

Unquestionably the Deck 5 Skybar serves a rowdier, party-seeking crowd.  Located within the Carmen Hotel, enjoy beachfront views of the Caribbean Sea below while listening to electronic music.  Some of the best sea views in town are seen from this roof deck.  If you seek a club type vibe, the Deck 5 Skybar should be your choice.

Cost:  There’s a cover charge for most everyone which can be applied towards your consumption.  $300 per person during the week. On weekends men pay $500 pesos while women only are charged $300 pesos.   On Wednesdays ladies get in free from 5pm-7pm.

4 – Roof Club

Situated atop the Palm at Playa Hotel, the Roof Club stimulates visitors with catchy beats and vibrant vistas.  Although the service is slow, the sunsets are worth the wait.  You may feel forgotten, but that just gives you more time to relax and enjoy the lazy Mexican pace.  If you’re in a rush, I recommend going to the bar to remind them.

Cost: Buy at least one drink 0r meal to use the roofdeck.   For pool use you need to buy a day pass: Monday – Wednesday $400 pesos per person; Thursday – Sunday $600 pesos per person.  Happy house 2×1 cocktails 2-3pm and 5-6pm.  Sundays 2×1 drinks from 6pm to close.

Location: 8th Street between 5th and 10th Avenues atop the Palm at Playa Hotel.

5- Reef 28 Hotel

The Reef 28 Hotel opened in downtown Playa del Carmen in 2018.  Although my piña colada tasted like it was made from a machine, the other drinks didn’t disappoint.  I recommend sticking to the hard liquor and beer.  As for service, cocktails come slowly, but thankfully the waitstaff wear smiles.  And while you wait, enjoy the divine sunset vistas.

Cost:  Buy at least one drink 0r meal for free use of pools and Jacuzzis.  Thursdays from 5pm-8pm ladies drink at no cost.

Location:  1st Avenue and 28th Street atop the Reef 28 Hotel.
