Traveling involves a lot of experiences that delight your senses. The local culture, architecture, music and people give you a glimpse of a different lifestyle.  Playa del Carmen is a cosmopolitan city with hundreds of bars, restaurants and stores.  Although Playa started out as a small village, it has grown into a small city while preserving that small town feel.

One of the most enjoyable parts of traveling is experiencing a wide variety of delicious cuisines.   Below please find our list of the best restaurants in Playa del Carmen to help make your night unforgettable.

Most of the best restaurants are located near 5th Avenue, making almost everything within walking distance.

Oh LaLa

If you are looking for an unforgettable evening, Oh LaLa is the right place. It is listed as number one recommendation on Trip Advisor.

Remaining true to the original Playa del Carmen Style, Oh LaLa is a small restaurant located on Calle 14 north. It is different from the other more conventional restaurants in every single way.

At first you’ll be greeted by an amazingly friendly and warm staff.  This is the first clue that your evening is surely going to be memorable.

The atmosphere is unique. It opened back in 2011 and kept the small European design with outdoor and indoor tables making a total of 9 tables.

Co-owners George and Mikaela offer a personalized experience for their guests, ranging from a laid-back sampling of hors d’oeuvres and wines, to a leisurely look at the full menu.  The food is cosmopolitan and diverse but always delicious.  Please make a reservation before coming.  In high season you may need to book 1 month ahead of time.

The dishes are exquisite and combined with the overall atmosphere the experience of this beautiful restaurant is one of the best in town.

Axiote is located on 34th Street between 5th and 10the Avenues and combines Mexican and Mayan cuisine in a fusion of deliciousness.    The cozy, dimly-lit atmosphere and wooden tables and chairs gives the feeling you are eating in the jungle somewhere in the Yucatan.   Axiote uses 100% Mexican products to make some of the most interesting and delicious Mexican/Mayan food around.

The name “Axiote” refers to an ingredient in Mexican cuisine. Achiote  is a shrub that produces spiky pods filled with red seeds. These seeds have been used for red body paint and also an ingredient in Mexican cuisine. The name is symbolic of not only an ingredient but part of the culture and history of Mexico.

Try their tacos and guacamole. They also have a divine selection of specialty cocktails using Mezcal.

Don Chendo

Talking about pizzas, Don Chendo is a must visit place here in Playa, located on 30th avenue just a few blocks away from 5th avenue.

Don Chendo is Playa’s home for Chicago-Style, deep dish pizza and delicious pasta. This is the only place where you’ll find quasi-authentic Chicago Style deep-dish pizza as well as old school spaghetti and meatballs, shrimp, chicken, salads and more. Don Chendo is all about home cooking.

The menu offers a wide variety of dishes but each dish is named for a reason…. So don’t forget to ask your waiter the story behind the name.

Don Chendo’s owner, Russell, is an experienced chef that learned his recipes from an Italian woman in New York City. He is very involved in the making and preparation of every dish, from the shopping of every tomato to the making of the crust.

This is one of those places in Playa with a beautiful background story that is implicit in every delicious pizza slice.
